Can Dining Chairs Be Extra Living Room Seats?

Before buying an extra armchair for the few evenings when the sofa is full, pull a dining chair into the living room. Put it where a guest would actually sit and stay there for a conversation. You may find that the seat you already own does the job, without claiming a permanent corner of the room.

A dining chair is a sensible spare seat for short visits and games around the coffee table. It is a less convincing substitute for a chair someone uses to read or watch a whole film. The useful question is how often that extra place is needed, and for how long.

Keep the conversation together

A spare chair only helps if the guest can join in. Pulling it against a wall opposite the sofa may create a distant, formal line of seats. Try turning it slightly towards the coffee table or placing it at the open end of the sofa, close enough that nobody has to raise their voice.

Now stand up and walk the usual routes to the kitchen, balcony and dining table. If the added chair forces everyone to squeeze between its back and a cabinet, move it before deciding that the room is “too small” for guests. An occasional seat can sit in a place that you would never choose for permanent furniture, as long as it is comfortable to use while it is there.

The table matters too. If dinner is part of the visit, borrowing two of four dining chairs leaves only two at the table. Work out when the move happens. Perhaps everyone eats first and then moves to the sofa; perhaps the chair should remain at the table and the living room needs another solution. There is no point solving seating in one room by creating a shortage in the next.

Try the chair you own before buying another

Move the actual chair, sit down and lean back as you would during a visit. Does the back support the way you want to sit? Can you set down a drink without reaching across someone? Does the chair sit at a comfortable height relative to the sofa, or does the guest feel perched above everyone else? These are easier to judge in the room than from a product photo.

A padded seat and back can make an occasional chair more inviting, but they do not turn an upright dining chair into a lounge chair. Seat shape, back angle and the individual sitter all matter. If the extra seat is used several nights a week, the discomfort you tolerate for a half-hour chat will become part of daily life. That is when a dedicated small-living-room armchair may be worth its floor space.

Check the move itself. Can the person who usually sets up the room carry or slide the chair without difficulty? Are there rugs or floor edges to cross? Look at the chair feet and your flooring before dragging it. A “flexible” plan is not flexible if setting it up feels like moving house each time friends come over.

The studio view makes the Novera’s back shape and overall footprint easier to compare. It is still a dining chair, so test it for the length of sitting you expect.

A dining chair that can do occasional double duty

The Novera Chair is listed at 50 cm wide, 57 cm deep and 77 cm high, with an ash frame and chenille upholstery. Use that 50 × 57 cm footprint when you test a guest position in your living room. The padded back and seat make it worth trying for conversation; whether it suits a longer evening is something to judge by sitting in it. See more options in Casa Lusso’s dining chairs.

Give the chair a normal home

Borrowed seating works best when the chair has an obvious place to go back to. At the end of the evening, it returns to the dining table, leaving the living-room path clear again. Avoid buying more dining chairs than you need at the table solely to make the occasional living-room plan work; those spare chairs still need somewhere to live on ordinary days.

If you already have a comfortable dining chair that looks good beside the sofa, use it. You do not have to match its upholstery to the lounge furniture. A shared wood tone or a colour picked up in the rug is enough to make the temporary seat feel intentional. The guest will care more about being included in the conversation than about a perfect furniture set.

Try your proposed arrangement during the next visit before buying anything. If the chair gets used happily and goes back easily, you have found your extra seat. If guests avoid it and crowd onto the sofa, that is useful information too: the room may need a genuine lounge chair rather than another dining chair.
